OUR STORY
Sarah & David Hallas
“Our journey to understanding how our brain chemicals affect our wellbeing began in 2014 when David experienced what is traditionally described as a Breakdown or Burnout, but what we prefer to call feeling Helpless and Hopeless.
After a lot of rest and a job change, he recovered. However, the experience led him to further investigate the effects of ongoing stress on both leaders and employees, and how excessive cortisol, adrenalin and noradrenalin can have an impact on the brain – negatively affecting wellbeing.
In 2016 David met Dr Ian Weinberg, a neurosurgeon. This encounter solidified David’s interest in the mind-body connection in health and brought into perspective the influence external conditions were having on himself and his colleague’s performance and wellness.
In 2020 we were both heavily affected by the COVID pandemic when David got retrenched and I watched my events company of 25yrs disintegrate.
This catalysed us into studying further in our fields of interest. David became qualified as a Systemic Wellness Practitioner and a Neuro-modulation Coach and I successfully completed my transformational coaching training, which complimented the other qualifications I hold in marriage and bereavement counselling and addiction coaching.
On 30 August 2021, we faced the biggest tragedy of our lives. We went to a meeting for one hour and when we returned we discovered that our 26yr old son had taken his life. He hanged himself in our garden, a place we had called home for 29yrs.
Our completed studies assisted us in facing this devastating situation and we got to learn first-hand how to apply the principles and tools of neuromodulation and transformational coaching.
After months of reflection and hard work in therapy we were able to genuinely see the role positive brain chemicals play in the rehabilitation process and frame our experience in terms of the reality of the world around us.
During this journey we became the South African managing partners of a dynamic company in the UK called The Positive Profitability Company, as their teachings also played a part in our recovery process. We have since created Mind Growth Masters, with the goal of sharing our knowledge and the tools we’ve used through our lived-experience via workshops and one-on-one coaching.”
