Stay connected and stay happy!
In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, human connectivity has taken a dive thanks to social media, and Covid. COVID 19 has exacerbated the disconnection we experience from our communities. Many people have become isolated due to lockdowns and restrictions. As we navigate the aftermath of the pandemic, it is crucial to acknowledge its impact on mental health.
Unfortunately, disconnection from one another has adversely affected our mental wellness, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness, without us even realising it.
However, there are steps we can take to rekindle the sense of community and belonging we once had.
Join Clubs and Social Groups – Whether its sports clubs, book club (even if you don’t share books) or other hobby-based groups, these gatherings offer an opportunity to meet like minded individuals with shared interests. Engaging in group activities fosters a sense of camaraderie, reduces feeling of isolation and improves mental wellness.
Prioritise in-Person Interactions – while social media and digital communication are convenient, they cannot fully replace the value of face-to-face interactions. Whenever possible, prioritise spending time with friends, family, and acquaintances in person. If not in person – pick up the phone and have a chat, I often pour myself a glass of wine and call a friend for a catch-up – we call it Dop and Dial
Cultivate Empathy and understanding – developing empathy and understanding towards others can create a more compassionate and supportive community. When we actively listen to other’s experiences and emotions, we foster a sense of belonging and acceptance. Empathy is a powerful tool in combatting loneliness and strengthening human connections. Empathy produces Oxytocin which is a wonderful chemical for our happiness!!!
Human connectivity is a vital aspect of our mental wellness. In today’s world, its easy to become isolated, but by taking proactive steps to join clubs, participate in community events, and prioritise in-person interactions, we can build meaningful connections and create a sense of belonging. COVID 19 has brought unique challenges, but by addressing its impact and supporting one another, we can collectively work towards reclaiming the sense of community we once had. Let us strive to stay connected, empathetic and supportive for our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.
